Sebacic acid is a dicarboxylic acid obtained from the dry distillation of castor oil. It is derived from castor oil. Two molecules are needed to obtain a castor sebacic acid. Castor oil is obtained from the fruit seed of castor (Ricinus communis L.) a large shrub that grows mainly in India, Brazil and China.

The seed has an oil content of 40-50%. It is solid at room temperature and melts above 130 ° C. Is in the form of white crystalline solid (powder or granules depending of the manufacturer).
